Familiar Beginnings
Heirloom’s debut album recently released on Shifting Paradigm Records. Helmed by Ben Dameron (guitar and compositions) and Hannah Johnson (drums and compositions), the band is rounded out by award-winning saxophonist, Sam Taylor, and midwest heavyweight, Tim Ipsen, on bass.
Containing songs written during Heirloom’s incipiency as a band, the project title centers around elated feelings spurred on by novelty… yet tempered by a sense of cyclical repetition. A déjà vu, of sorts.
“Though Familiar Beginnings sits comfortably within the modern post-bop world, it also resists categorization. The music is impressionistic without being vague, structured while alive with spontaneity. This album rewards close listening, blending familiar sounds with new horizons.”
“With a jazz band's name so lyrically titled, Milwaukee's Heirloom shouldn't have surprised us that their first recorded artifact is a musical objet de art.”
